Main Village / Chora Ios
Chora is one of the most picturesque villages in the Cyclades. The main village of Chora Ios is built into the side of the hill, and is a traditional sleepy Greek village during the day with winding streets, blue and white buildings and colourful flowers. Around every corner you find something new – beautiful alleyways, pink flowers, winding staircases, cafes, lovely boutiques, jewellery shops and much much more.
You should definitely spend some time on your visit to Ios wandering around and visit some of the must-see sights in Chora. One of the first sights you will see in Chora is the cathedral of Evangelismos in the centre of the village. The Town Hall and Archaeological Museum are just opposite the cathedral on the main road.
At the top of the village, make sure to visit the Amphitheatre Odysseas Elytis for spectacular views of Mylopotas Beach or to attend a cultural event there. Your next stop should be the windmills of Ios, just below the amphitheatre. The main square or Kato Piatso is busy during the day with the locals drinking coffee and playing backgammon.
Visit the charming church of Panagia Gremniotissa later in the day for one of the best views of the sunset in Ios.
Then at night, the narrow streets of Chora transform making the village the place to be for a great night out! Explore the fantastic restaurants, shops, bars and clubs open late every night. Read through our Ios Nightlife guide for more information.
